

He was born on December 20, 1944,in Charlotte, NC, to Charles Dorman and Mary Ellen (Barley) Shirey, Sr.
He graduated from Myers Park High School in Charlotte, NC, in 1963.
Charles was a Vietnam veteran who served his country in the United States Air Force from June 24, 1966, until his honorable discharge on June 23, 1970.
He had been a firefighter for eighteen years, retiring from Station 7 located on North Davidson Street and 32nd Street, in Charlotte.
Mr. Shirey was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Charlotte.
Charlie was a 24 year member of the Oasis Shriners. He was a member of the Oasis Directors Staff for twenty years and served twice as Captain. He was a member of and served as president of the Mecklenburg Shrine Club twice. Charlie was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Mint Hill Masonic Lodge No. 742. He was a dedicated and active member of the Shrine. You would see his smiling face at pretty much all of the Oasis Shrine events.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry (O’Daniel) Shirey; his four children: Shane, Kernersville, NC; John, Matthews, NC; Crystal, Charlotte; and Martin, Midland, NC; six grandchildren; four siblings: Cristeen Falls, Browns Summit, NC; Regena Brown, Oak Ridge, NC; Donald Shirey, Concord, NC; and Mary Alice Heybrock, Greensboro, NC; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, from 7-9 p.m. at the McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd, Mint Hill, NC. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 8451 Idlewild Road, Charlotte. The Reverend Patrick T. Hoare will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Sharon Memorial Park with masonic and graveside firefighter rites.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
