Damon Eric Gammon, age 9 years and 10 months, passed away in the comfort of his home and in the loving arms of his mother and father, on April 23, 2019. His final days were spent peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
In his short yet memorable life, Damon managed to touch the hearts of all who knew him. His friendly smile and happy personality along with his ready hugs and generous compliments could (and often did!) melt the hearts of those around him and always left the receiver both uplifted and entertained. Even during the particularly tough times he faced as he bravely fought cancer, he always maintained a positive outlook with his sense of humor and a joke in his pocket. Damon possessed a gift of faith that provided him the strength, perseverance, and ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges. His indomitable spirit taught us that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories.
Damon loved collecting Pokemon cards, playing his favorite video games with his big brother and sister, and watching his favorite shows – preferably while cuddling close to his mom and dad. Also, like many children his age, Damon had discovered a passion for reading after being introduced to the magical world of Harry Potter.
Last year, Damon had his, “Best summer ever!” It began with the celebration of his 9th birthday at Dave and Buster’s and continued as he went on vacations to both the mountains and the beach where he made many fun family memories splashing in the pool, riding go karts, playing arcade games, and watching fireworks. Once school began, he worked hard at home to catch up to his peers having previously missed several months due to surgeries and treatments. Excited to learn everything he had missed, he managed to reach his goals in record time – particularly in math where he was especially talented.
With Damon’s passing we would like to remind others that this life is truly one to be celebrated! Our hearts will forever be filled with gratitude for the wonderful family, friends, and members of the community who have continuously shown their love for not only our sweet Damon, but our entire family through their unwavering support and many acts of kindness. We have been blessed to witness many miracles and discover countless tender mercies from our loving Father in Heaven throughout this journey and we know that even though we will miss Damon tremendously; his kindness, big heart, cute dimples, and funny jokes, he will forever remain in our hearts as we continue to feel his influence all around us. It is a privilege and honor to have you as our son, Damon! Until we meet again.
Damon is survived by his loving parents, Jason and Audrey Gammon of Charlotte, NC; older brother Noah Gammon (13); older sister Alexandra Gammon (11); paternal grandparents Bob and Tina Gammon (Gaffney, SC); maternal grandfather Eric Louchez and maternal grandmother Dominique Louchez (Conover, NC).
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 13925 Thompson Road, Mint Hill, North Carolina 28227.
