Ellen Watson Rivers

Ellen Rivers, 82, of Charlotte, North Carolina, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Born on May 22, 1944, in Norwood, North Carolina, Ellen was the beloved daughter of the late Gordon Watson and Ruby Barbee.

Ellen was a devoted wife to Hank Rivers for more than 62 years. She was a cherished mother to her daughters, Dawne Hargett (Lex) and Robin Hampton (Jon), and an adoring grandmother to Conner Hampton and Cam Hampton, who were the absolute joys of her life. Her strength, compassion, and unwavering support were gifts her family will cherish forever.

Ellen graduated from Norwood High School before continuing her education at King's College. Early in her career, she worked for Mutual Savings and Loan before dedicating more than 22 years to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Throughout her years of service, she made an impact at Reedy Creek Elementary School, J.H. Gunn Elementary School, Clear Creek Elementary School, and Albemarle Road Elementary School. Whether working in the library, first grade or the school office, she poured her heart into every role and cared deeply for the students, families, and colleagues she encountered.

Her faith was the foundation of her life. After marrying Hank, she faithfully worshiped at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, later attended Cornerstone Baptist Church, and for more than 23 years was a devoted member of Idlewild Baptist Church in Matthews, North Carolina. Her relationship with Jesus shaped the way she lived—with kindness, grace, compassion, and a servant's heart.

Taking care of others was simply who Ellen was. Whether caring for her family or encouraging those around her, she gave of herself freely and wholeheartedly. By the example she lived every day, she taught those around her what it meant to love, serve, and care for others. Her caring spirit touched countless lives and remains one of the greatest gifts she leaves behind.

Ellen found joy in life's simple blessings. She loved working in her yard, especially tending to her beautiful roses. She enjoyed shopping, treasured the color yellow, and delighted in decorating her home for every holiday, making each season feel special for her family. She had a lifelong love for Elvis Presley and never missed an opportunity to play one of his songs, often smiling and saying, "You look like you need a little Elvis."

Never one to let age define her, Ellen got her first tattoo—a bouquet of roses—when she turned 80, followed by a yellow butterfly on her 81st birthday. She wore them proudly, just as she embraced life with joy, courage, and a sense of adventure.

Those who knew Ellen will remember her for her generous spirit, unwavering strength, and her remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed and cared for. She lived with kindness, gave selflessly, and left a lasting impression on everyone blessed to know her. Her family will forever cherish the countless memories, traditions, laughter, and love she gave so freely.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Idlewild Baptist Church.
