Ernest Romesh Chander was born Oct 26, 1940 in Palampur, H.P., India, to parents Leena John and Fazal Masih Chander. He was the youngest of their 5 children: Zarina, Sheila, Manmohan, Ravi, and finally Ernest. On June 9, 2022, Ernest passed away at the blessed age of 81 at his home with his wife, Pushpa, by him.
From the humble beginnings his Anglican mission worker parents provided for their children, Ernest left his beloved childhood home in the Himalayan mountains for the big city of Ludhiana, Punjab, where he earned his MBBS at Christian Medical College (CMC) and the heart of a 19 year old MBBS/ medical student from U.P.--Pushpa Walters. They married in 1969; he was 28, she was 24. Ernest earned his MD at All India Institute in New Delhi and served as the Director of Nurmanzil Psychiatric Center, Lucknow, India.
He earned an MPH from John' Hopkins University in 1973 where he, Pushpa, and their two young children, Renuka and Neeraj, spent 3 years in the USA. The family returned to India in 1976, where over the next 6 years, Ernest served as Founder, Head, and Professor of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and then as Medical Superintendent of CMC and Brown Memorial Hospital, Ludhiana.
Ernest and family returned to the United States in 1983, where he earned a Post Doctoral degree from Yale University. In 2016, he retired from private practice of Psychiatry in Gastonia, NC. He was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC.
Though he was awarded Life Membership and Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association, his greatest achievement was being "Nana" and "Dada" to his grandchildren.
Ernest's surviving family include Pushpa (beloved wife of 53 years); Renuka (daughter); Neeraj (son); Renuka’s husband and children: Jim, Maya (19), and Rohin (18); Neeraj’s wife and daughters: Tania, Sophia (11), and Priyanka (7).
