

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 from 10:00 until 11:30 A.M. in the worship center of Hickory Grove Baptist Church’s Main Campus. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11:30 A.M. following the reception of friends, with the Rev. Clint Pressley, the Rev. John Harrill and the Rev. Henry Ward officiating. Interment will follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens.
Born February 27, 1929 in Pickshin, WV, Henry was the youngest son of the late Herman Jennings and Florence Jennings. After over 20 years in the military, he retired from the U.S. Army in June of 1969, after having honorably served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War as a Master Sergeant. After military retirement, he worked for the Mecklenburg County Veteran’s Service Office in Charlotte, NC, retiring in 1995. He served for a number of years as Department Director. Henry was a longtime member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Friendly Sunday School class.
Henry will be remembered as a loving father, husband, grandfather, and faithful friend, who found joy in serving the needs of others, devoting time and energy supporting our country’s military, and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Helga E. Jennings; three children, Lorraine Long of Charlotte, Michele Patrick, and husband Eddie, of Charlotte, and Richard Jennings and wife, Julie, of Concord; seven grandchildren, Ryan Shonce and husband, Rob, Christen Higgins and husband, James, Christine Rathburn and husband, Josh, Jennifer Haney and husband, Jeremy, Lauren Long (deceased), Kayla Jennings and Katherine Jennings; and eight great grandchildren. Henry is also survived by his loving sisters, Maggie Boone of Livonia, Michigan, and Betty Jennings of Bluefield, Virginia.
The family deeply appreciates the devoted help of physicians, nurses and staff that cared for Henry over the years and during his illness, as well as the members and staff of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Missions Funds, 6050 Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, NC 28215.
