Janice was 78 years old and still an inspiration to all she met, as they were to her. She was a profound thinker, a true believer, a steadfast daughter, sister, aunt, friend and confidante, a person of faith with quiet determination and unceasing self-discipline who never gave up, never quit. She overcame many difficulties, moving her mountains, as she said, "one tablespoon of dirt at a time". She attended Plaza and Shamrock Garden Elementary, Eastway Jr. and Garinger High Schools, CPCC and graduated from Gardner-Webb University where she received her Degree in Psychology.
Janice was employed by the Mecklenburg Center for Human Development for 27 years, retiring as Director of the Medical Records Department. Janice's life was devoted to her family, especially her mother, whom she cared for day and night for the last 2 years of Mother's life. She was also devoted to her friends, her faith and her Church which she served in many capacities. Janice loved music and was a choir member from her youth. She was active in community service and many charitable and service groups. She sponsored and helped physically build a house for Habitat for Humanity. She loved books and book clubs. Once she was so taken by a bestselling autobiography by Alisha Appleman-Jerman, a holocaust survivor, that she wrote to her and they became friends. Alisha came to Charlotte at Janice's invitation and spoke at Janice's church, refusing any speaker fee and WSOC-TV covered the event. Janice was a force. Her heart, her spirit, her hands were hands of God here on earth.
Janice is survived by sister, Carol McWhirter Sloan of Mint Hill; niece, Shelley Sloan Ellis (husband, Rick Ellis) of Mint Hill; great niece and nephew, Isabelle and Daylin McWhirter and their mother, Melissa Huffman of Sylva NC; and sister-in-law Sheila Tolbert McWhirter Haywood of Hickory NC. Janice was predeceased by her mother, Eva Lee Griffin McWhirter; her father, Harold Lloyd McWhirter, Sr. and her brother, Harold Lloyd (Butch) McWhirter, Jr. and his son, her nephew, Rhett McWhirter.
