Joseph “Pete” Francis Daly, III, of Matthews, NC, passed away on November 28, 2025. Pete valiantly battled gastroesophageal cancer for four and a half years before peacefully falling asleep holding his beloved wife’s hand.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, to Joseph Francis Daly and Grace Johnson Daly, Pete spent the majority of his childhood years in Rancocas, New Jersey. He is survived by Beverly Haigler-Daly, his wife of 20 years, his son, Patrick Garriott Daly of Concord, and Beverly’s children, Alicia Haigler Smith (Jay) of Wilmington, NC, and Aaron Lane Haigler (Tonya) of Rocky Mount, VA. Pete was blessed with five grandchildren: Rachel and Tavia Smith of Wilmington, and Ashlynn, Aimslee, and Tipton Haigler of Rocky Mount.
After graduating from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, Pete moved to New York City to pursue a career in finance. He spent time on Wall Street, back when trading happened on paper ticker tape. He later moved to Charlotte, NC, where he worked in commercial investments, served as a trainer for stockbrokers, and worked as a financial planner at both Bank of America and smaller, more intimate wealth management companies. Pete taught finance classes at Central Piedmont Community College and was a regular guest lecturer at Queens College and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Pete ended his six-decade career as a Managing Director with Stuyvesant Capital Management Corporation. He took great pride in continuing to work and support select clients with whom he built long-standing, trusted relationships even during his rigorous cancer treatment.
Pete was an avid runner and swimmer. He completed several half-marathons and was quick to jump into local 5 or 10K runs. Pete and Bev’s neighbors dubbed them “the running (and later walking) couple” as they could be seen outside together almost every day. Pete enjoyed swimming in the creek in Ransocas, in the ocean at Wrightsville or Myrtle Beach, and in his neighborhood pool. He credited walking and swimming with extending his cancer battle and quality of life.
Pete enjoyed music and liked to sing. He lent his resonant, bass voice to church choirs for many years. He was quick to play the piano with his grandkids and to pull Beverly out on the dance floor. Being from Philly, Pete was a lifelong Phillies and Eagles fan, appropriately indoctrinating his grandkids into committed supporters. He also served as an honorary member of his grandchildren’s sports teams. He never missed wearing his Roger Williams University shirt during college sailing season, and had his iPad and Franklin County gear ready for baseball, football, lacrosse, and cheer competitions.
Some of Pete’s most favorite things included traveling with Beverly, being surrounded by his family, receiving a call or text from far-away grandchildren, and the energy that filled the house when his blended family crashed into town. His last days were full of that type of love.
Pete was devoutly Catholic and cared deeply for the people and relationships built while attending St. Luke’s in Mint Hill.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Luke’s at 1:00pm on Friday, December 19, 2025, followed by a reception at Pete and Beverly’s home in Shannamara, Matthews, NC. The reception will be held from 2:00 - 5:00pm, with Words of Celebration at 3:00pm.
In lieu of flowers or other gestures, the family asks that donations be made to the Humane Society of Charlotte or the “Forward With Christ” campaign at St. Luke’s Catholic Church.
