

He was born on August 7, 1945, to the late William and Genevieve McDermott.
Formerly of Cedar Knolls, New Jersey, Joseph worked for Essex County Road & Bridges for many years. He proudly served in the United States Army and later served as a commander with the VFW Post of Whippany, New Jersey. Joseph had many interests and enjoyments in his life. He loved watching both college and professional football with his favorite teams being Penn State, Notre Dame, the New York Giants, and the Carolina Panthers. He enjoyed going to breakfast at The Bridge Restaurant and loved a good hot fudge sundae. Joseph also liked spending time with his neighbors as well as going to church and was a regular attendee at Notre Dame of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church in New Jersey and later St. Luke Catholic Church in Mint Hill, North Carolina.
Along with his parents, Joseph is preceded in death by his wife, Christine McDermott; and brothers, William McDermott and Patrick McDermott. He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl McDermott (Rich Madray); son, Joseph McDermott (Angela Fleming); grandchildren, Raven McDermott (David Rawls), Sierra McDermott and Tyler McDermott; and great-grandchildren, Jaden and Lily.
A funeral mass with military honors will be held on Monday, Monday, March 23, 2026, at 1:00 pm at St. Luke Catholic Church, located at 9800 Fairview Rd., Mint Hill, North Carolina.
