Joyce Louise Johnston

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ron Johnston; her daughter, Anne Haverson; her siblings, Bill Smith, Charles Smith, Sandra Smith, Betty Lee Smith, and Steven Smith; her half-siblings, Wood Smith, Helen Moon, Wilma Bishop, and Frances Adams.

She is survived by her siblings, Hoyt Smith, Dorothy Powers, and Sue Hooper; her children, Bill Johnston (Suzanne), Donna Brisco, Michelle Austin (Scott), Brett Thornton and Scott Tolbert; her grandchildren, Patrick Tolbert, Matthew Austin, Christopher Austin, Brandon McCraw, Katie Brisco, Ashley Serbonich, Christopher Johnston, Julia Johnston, Audrey Johnston, Kelly Nuccitelli, and Keith Barrett; and her great grandchildren, Emma Serbonich, Caylee Serbonich, Boston Hobart, and Aden Barrett.

Joyce retired from the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system as a first grade teacher assistant. She loved helping children learn and had a knack for helping children learn to read. She so loved to read and was so passionate about reading that she always kept a book in her car, purse, and on her bedside table, and liked exchanging books with family and friends.

She enjoyed getting together with friends to play cards and board games. She always looked forward to family vacations to the beach and to Cullowhee to visit family. She had a green thumb and her plants, gardens and flowers were always healthy and thriving. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. Most of all, she enjoyed being with friends and family.

A Celebration of Joyce’s Life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 9th at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC. A visitation will be held prior from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

A private burial will be held at a later date.
