Surrounded by her loving family, Kay Stegall entered her heavenly home in the early hours of April 5th, after a lengthy battle with dementia. Ellen “Kay” was born on November 26, 1941, the fourth of five children, to Croff & Lois Carpenter. She grew up in Peachland, North Carolina. Her brothers, Joe Carpenter, AC (Karen) Carpenter, and Gene (Wanda) Carpenter have gone on before her, and she is survived by one brother, Jimmy (Ethel) Carpenter.
Kay was married to her high school sweetheart, Billy M. Stegall, for 64 years. They moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, shortly after marriage, and she delighted in being a Homemaker, also assisting with the family plumbing business from time to time. Together, they raised a son and three daughters, Billy Mark (Joanne) Stegall of Fort Mill, South Carolina; Sandra Rusch of Concord, North Carolina; Susan (Butch) Hicks of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Crystal (Jerry) Taylor of Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina. She was a cherished MawMaw to Holly Cooper, Georgia (Matt) Reagan, Houston (Lee-he) Stegall, Heather (Alan) Herrington, Katelyn (Bryan) Whitecotton, Hannah Stegall, Megan (Brett) Metcalf, Alex Taylor, and Grant Taylor; and great-grandmother to 17 precious little ones.
Kay loved her Lord, her husband, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. She enjoyed quilting, baking, and serving others. She was a Red Cross volunteer for many years, taught a children’s Sunday School class, and kept nursery at her church.
The family would like to especially thank Lisa Auten, Maria Pina, and Shelanda Drakeford for the special care shown to Mama during her last days. Thank you to Daddy for loving and caring for Mama all these years.
Kay’s family will receive friends on Friday, April 8, from 12:00 noon – 1:45 pm, with a funeral service following at 2:00 pm, at University Hills Baptist Church, 1500 Suther Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28213. Interment will follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens.
