Lemuel "Hill" Hill Overton Jr.

Hill Overton passed away on December 26th in Monroe, North Carolina. He was born in Ellerbe, North Carolina on May 25, 1936 to Lemuel Hill Overton, Sr. and Mary Lucille Arnold Overton, both were school teachers. He later had a little sister, Celia Ann.

He graduated from East Mecklenburg High School where he met his future wife, Phyllis Ann. He attended North Carolina State University and graduated with an engineering degree but not before marrying Phyllis in 1958. He was in the Army for 2 years. They had two children, David Hill and Melanie Carol.

Hill was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Monroe. He attended Sunday School there for many years up until church closures in 2020. He was considered an eternal optimist by those who knew him. Over the years, he never “worked” a day in his life because he loved his jobs as a sales engineer and a broadcaster so much that it never really felt like work. He also enjoyed attending races and any kind of sports from basketball, football and golf to his grandson’s T-ball and soccer games and granddaughter’s dance recitals. Hill had a very loud and professional voice (he could never whisper a secret) and was well known for it. He was heavily involved in announcing at many Nascar events for years and was fortunate enough to be the track voice in the movie Six Pack with Kenny Rogers. He loved WIXE radio and was part of their radio family since 1968. He had a show called “Let’s Talk Racing”.

Hill was a husband, father, paw-paw, uncle, and friend. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Hill is survived by his wife, Phyllis Overton; his son, David Overton (Junia); his daughter, Melanie Vicars (Tim); grandson, Jackson Vicars; granddaughter, Jessica Vicars; niece, Ann Staples; and nephew, Billy Houston.

Hill was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday December 30th at McEwen Funeral Home in Mint Hill, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Charlotte, NC. Visitation will be from 1-1:45.
