He was born on March 26, 1922 in Union County, NC, the sixth of twelve children of the late Vernon Hampton Cox and Maggie Pigg Cox. He attended Union County schools and was drafted into the Air Force in 1942 where he served as Quartermaster in the European Theater during WWII. Soon after the war, he was employed by Carolina Rim & Wheel (later to become Automotive Electric Association) where he worked in sales for 43 years.
He was preceded in death by his adored wife of fifty years, Helen Towery Cox; four sisters, Bernice Chapman, Ruth McNeely, Lois Laney and Margaret Hunter; five brothers, Ney Cox, Joe Cox, Morris Cox, Howard Cox and Donald Cox.
Mr. Cox is survived by his son Gary Cox (Stephaney); daughter, Sheila Cox Haene (Glenn); granddaughters, Anna Jordan (Jeff) and Aleah Adams (Troy); great grandsons, Beck and Brody Jordan and Carson and Caleb Adams; brother, Billy Cox; sister, Joyce Greene; sister-in-law, Catherine Cox, Druann Cox and numerous nieces and nephews.
On the weekends he would enjoy rides down to the country, long walks around the neighborhood and Sunday lunch with his family. Lex also enjoyed spending time with friends over Bojangles’ biscuits and playing Bingo. He was known for his superb gardening skills and giving heart, sharing the crops with his friends.
A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2018 with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227.
Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
