To a mother..who asked for so little, but gave so very much!
You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure..., you're gone yet not FORGOTTEN.

Our mother has the most beautiful caring and kind soul. We missed her dearly, and at her 3rd year anniversary of her passing today, we will cherished her stories and wisdom and will remain forever in our hearts...

What I love about mama was she always took care of everyone’s needs first. Feed her children and grandchildren first before herself. She loves to cook for them and that smile on her face and the tears on her eyes showed the joy and love she had for everybody. 🥰
Some of her bests were Inun-on, Humba, and tortang talong which my kids loved to eat growing up. I tried to replicate these delicious Lola’s cuisines, but there’s something she puts extra special that made all her cooking taste so good! Even when she shared the ingredients (from memory) with me, it’s never the same. Though Ronnie and my kids with a smile on their faces would say…almost! 
Ahhh…I’ll keep trying, because that memory of her should live  not only in our hearts but in our tastebuds too.😋

I think the first words Mama Lou ever said to me were "EAT, You need to eat". I remember sitting at her kitchen table while I ate, listening to her stories of growing up and living in the Phillipines. And of course stories of her children whom she loved more than life.
So many of my memories revolved around her playing her electric organ/keyboard. I could sit and listen to her play for hours. She gave her children the gift of music and laughter. I remember so many nights at Roy Siplons house and it was always mama playing the piano. If she wasn't playing, she was dancing. She had such a deep, deep love for her children, grandchildren and family. She was loved by so many because SHE loved. I hope and pray that she truly KNEW how very loved she was. 
I love you Mama. ❤❤ Rest in peace.

“Borogo, have you taken your lunch yet?” These are exactly the words asked 53 years ago by a woman who we celebrate her life today. she was there tending to her little garden or front yard outside her modest house in Calape, Bohol. words which are loaded with no pretensions, but love, kindness, and compassion. these words radiate positivity in me. i simply answered her, “bush pa man ko, tiya” and then i would resume playing with that little ‘bagon’ somewhere in the vicinity. these words played vital part in my formative years, and i was able to measure TIYA GARDENING later in life to be a woman of few words, and a very secretive of what goodness she’d done. for me, it was huge and i will treasure and nurture this memory forever. tiya, thank you and Godspeed.

Our grandparents should give us a sense of who we are and where we came from.  My story is out of the ordinary.  I grew up not knowing her as a “Lola”.   I’ve never shared stories or laugher with her.  She never held me in her arms growing up.  Ive never experienced her home cooked meals…

But I shared memorable moments with her that sealed her legacy in my life.  The first memory was the moment we saw each other again after 37 years!! We were on our way back to Canada and had a quick stop over at her place, before driving to the airport. It was a brief meeting but very special. She remembered me and called me my nickname as a child, “Bokyo”. 

The second memory I have of her was on her birthday celebration the following year after we  met. We shared a moment where I was able to bless her with words from Numbers 6: 24-26.  The Lord’s been good and gracious to me for such times spent with Lola.  She will always be remembered.

Marcial and I have a soft spot in our hearts for Mama.  She mirrored the qualities of a sweet mother, a loving, doting grandmother and an independent woman.  Her warm hugs  or “abrazos” reminded me of my mother and grandmother.  Mama Lou, you are the one that made me realized what I’ve been missing all these years……my mother’s hugs and my grandmother’s “ sniffy kiss”.  I didn’t realize  that I’ve been missing all these until you did them to me in various times , you brought back sweet , beautiful memories of my Nanay and Lola , same hugs, same sniffy kiss  …… now, they are gone.  I am actually tearing up as I do this  …. Goodbye Mama Lou , May you Rest In Peace  and find eternal joy in the loving embrace of Mama Mary and our LORD JESUS.🙏❤️

Dear Lola,

Even though you weren’t around much when I was growing up, we’ve become close. I have so many memories of you. Those times when you visited us in the Philippines were great memories for me. Not only because you brought back so many pasalubong for me and my sisters but because I knew we would spend time together playing mahjong into the wee hours of the night. The only Lola I know who would let her grandkids stay up waaaay past midnight. When all the other 10 year old kids were tucked in bed sound asleep,  I was shuffling and reshuffling those mahjong tiles with you. And I enjoyed every minute of it. 

Growing up I never liked to admit that I speak Bisaya. It’s a dialect that many Filipinos made fun of. I realize now that I’m glad I speak it because speaking Bisaya with you was another connection that brought us closer. I learned so many Bisaya expressions from you and my mama that Soteri and Yiannaki are now picking up too. 

I’ll miss looking at pages of People magazine with you and talking about JLo  or who rocked the best red lipstick on the red carpet. You loved to dress up and I remember you loved going to Filipino galas. You would always get excited picking out your outfits for the party. I hope to be a cool, easy-going, fashion-loving Lola like you someday.

The Rodriguez family will never be the same without you. There will be family gatherings again but it probably won’t happen as much as it used to. You were the glue that kept the family together. You lived a long life and I’m grateful that the boys got to know you.  I will always remember you. I love you, Lola.

Through close association with Bert and Nini, my husband Astor and I were privileged to call you Mama, our second mama. 
We have always admired your sweet smiles, wit and sense of independence. We will not forget our times together, dinners together and as spectators during your mahjong games with friends. 
Mama, you will be forever in our hearts as you go home to be in Jesus' arms. 

Mama as I call her is the epitome of kindness - and yes this is coming from her daughter in law.   Her children were the pride and joy of her life.   Anyone would see how her eyes would light up when she sees them.    She taught them all the love for music and laughter. 
She was always strong willed but very gracious and  generous yet very independent.   My friends and I would always say she comes from “The Independent Republic of Bohol” which is her hometown in the Philippines.    
I was fortunate enough to be able to spend time with her during the last few years of her life.    She taught me how to age gracefully, love fully,  to always do your best - never complain.   
I will miss you mama.   You are so loved.  I am certain the Lord will welcome you to your final home in heaven with the Blessed Virgin Mary all the Saints and angels.     I love you.

Mama R, as I dearly call her is the paragon of a matriarch who is patient, loving to each of her children and grandchildren and having no expectations from them . She was cheerful and grateful for every little attention given to her even from us, friends of Bert and Nini. Since her mind was sharp even to the end, we made time to play mahjong with her. She could beat us in mahjong and most times wipe us out of our coin purses. She enjoyed mahjong so much that she would skip a snack and even a meal as long as she is playing. I remember vividly this past Easter Sunday, when I had a small gathering at my house and Mama R came with Bert and Nini. 
She played the piano and sang Visayan songs to our hearts’ delight. Thank you Mama R for the joy and sunshine you shared with us til the end. 
Rest In peace in our Lord’s house of many mansions.
