Marilyn graduated from Des Moines Roosevelt High School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Iowa State University in 1969. While at Iowa State, she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority—an affiliation she continued to cherish through the years, including the ZOOM calls she loved with her Tri Delta class.
On June 22, 1968, Marilyn married James “Jim” Hansen. Together they built a life grounded in devotion and family, and Marilyn’s steady presence and care were felt most deeply by those closest to her.
Marilyn’s enjoyment of life was evident in the many ways she chose to spend her time. Marilyn cherished time with her family and friends. She had much pride in her grandsons and enjoyed spending time with them. Marilyn was an avid traveler who visited 28 foreign countries, and she also found happiness closer to home—boating on Lake Norman, playing bridge, reading, gardening, and going to the gym. She especially loved her convertible, embracing the simple pleasure of the open road.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Jim Hansen; her children, Jeff (Ami) Hansen and Amalie (Dr. Andrew) Herman; and her three grandsons, Bennett, Graham, and Emery Herman, whom she loved so much. She is also survived by her sister, Gloria Frech of Athens, Ohio.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 pm on October 31, 2026, at McEwen Funeral Service–Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227.
