When she arrived in heaven she was told “enter into your rest thou good and faithful servant.” Friends and family that have gone before her were there to meet her and rejoiced at her homecoming. Among those were, Herbert Wilson Porter (husband), William Shelton (father), Pearl Shelton (mother), William “Alfred” & Judy Shelton (brother and sister-in-law), and Kathleen Huntley (sister-in-law).
Mary Sue was born in Big Pine NC near Marshall on May 11, 1938 to William & Pearl Shelton. She was valedictorian of her high school class at Walnut High School and went on to get a double major in business and English from Western Carolina University and moved to Charlotte to teach at South Mecklenburg High School.
She then got a job at Belk Stores Services where she met the love of her life, Herbert Wilson Porter. They were married August 26, 1962 and had three sons who they devoted their lives to raising. She worked as a church secretary at Mint Hill Baptist Church then at First Baptist Church of Charlotte until she retired in 2004. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Charlotte for over 60 years teaching Sunday school, working in the daycare and singing in the choir. She was a loving “mawmaw” to 8 grandchildren.
She is survived by her 3 sons, John Porter(Janet), Herb Porter, Steve Porter(Julie); 8 grandchildren, Garrett, Kelly, Jenna, Abby, Dawson, Madykate, Autumn, & Jasper loving niece and caregiver, Megan Shelton.
She was one of the most caring and self-sacrificing mothers ever and was always putting others needs before her own. She loved studying and reading her bible, playing the piano and taking long walks on the beach. She was the type of person that could laugh at herself as well as with others for all the silly/funny stuff she ended up doing. There is a huge void in our family that will never be filled and she will be greatly missed.
Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church of Charlotte or Atrium Health Hospice-Union/Mecklenburg.
A visitation will be held at First Baptist Charlotte, 301 South Davidson St, Charlotte, NC 28202, on November 25, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Pastor Michael Cummings officiating.
Mary Sue will then be laid to rest at Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Rd, Mint Hill, NC 28227 following the service.
