Matt attended the University of Tennessee and UNC Charlotte, earning his Bachelor’s of Criminal Justice. After college he began a career in financial services. Over many years, his hard work helped families and small businesses achieve financial security, allowing them to focus on the things that matter most. Many of his colleagues became close family friends.
He found joy in the simple, meaningful rhythms of life - golf and bowling, live music, and the warmth of socializing with his many friends. He especially valued time spent with his three children. He rarely missed the chance to watch his favorite sports teams play in person, cheering most for the Yankees, the Vols, and the Wolfpack. He would travel near and far with family and friends to root for them, often stopping for a round of golf on the way. He also loved trips to the beach, where he shared adventures with those he cared for most.
Above all else, Matt’s life was anchored in the people around him. Nothing was more important to him than being with family and friends; he lived for it. With a rich social life and a steady smile, he brought a welcome presence to gatherings large and small, leaving behind memories that will be held close for years to come.
Matt is survived by his wife, Melissa; children, Korey, Cooper, and Jack; and brother, Chad (Semra). He was preceded in death by his parents, Ron and Karla Smith.
A Celebration of Life will be held at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227, on September 8, 2026, at 5:00 pm.
