

A native of Mint Hill, North Carolina, Melvin was a son of the late Dexter Lee Williams and Lessie Maude Wilson Williams. He was a graduate of Kings College and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired as a real estate agent with the City of Charlotte. Melvin was a longtime member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. He will be remembered for his love of writing poetry and his passion and talent in woodworking.
In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his siblings, Helen Teague, Lois Efird, Ruby Cox, Mary Sigmon, Donnie Williams and Franklin Williams; his grandson, K.C. Abernethy; his granddaughter, Becky Marie Williams; and his son-in-law, Joe Abernethy, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Crocker Williams; his three children, Melda Bustle and her husband, Raeford, Tommy Williams and his wife, Cookie, and Patricia Abernethy; and his sister, Maybelle Anderson. Mr. Williams also leaves behind his 16 grandchildren, Audra Miranda (Steve), Carrie Jordan (Michael), Zeke Williams, Brie Collinson (Dan), Devon Myers (Joey), Easton Williams (Daniel), Zane Williams, Cara Overcash (Brandon), Catie Simpson (Nathan), Shane Bustle (Megan), Justin Bustle (Kristin), Glenn Abernethy, Patrick Abernethy (Courtney) and Dylan Abernethy; 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service, with military funeral honors, will be held 3:00 pm Thursday, July 27, 2023, at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, North Carolina 28208. Dr. John Harrill will officiate. A memorial service will be held at Hickory Grove Baptist Church at a later date.
