

Michael, aka “Smitty” and “Pops”, was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, camping, golfing and going to the beach. He was known around home for being the “neighborhood husband”. He was a jack of all trades and worked many jobs over his career, his last was as a carrier for the Charlotte Observer. Michael loved vintage Volkswagens, Nascar, and Atlanta Braves baseball, but the thing he loved most in life was his family, especially his grandkids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Lori Lee Smith. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 37 years, Debbie Smith of Matthews; children, Chris Smith (Jill Mackey) of Monroe, NC, Joni McLain (Brian) of New Salem, NC; grandchildren, Tyler Scott, Morgan McLain; Joshua and Ryan Bates; one brother, David L. Smith (Karen) of Harrisburg, NC; numerous nieces and nephews and their families; a boxer named Barney and a cat named Malibu.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2012, at McEwen – Mint Hill, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Charlotte, NC 28227. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Sunset Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, 1613 E.
