Richard Anthony Fritz

Richard spent his life as a public servant and educator, developing and deepening his passion for firefighting. From an early age, possibly from birth, Rick always wanted to be a fireman. That never left him. Even his childhood pedal car was a firetruck! At the age of 16, while living in Penfield, N.Y., he became one of the founding members of The Fire Explorer Post of the Penfield volunteer fire department which was the stepping stone for his professional career. He later served with the Muscatine (IA) fire department, the Davenport (IA) fire department, and held leadership roles including training Captain and Battalion Chief of training for the High Point (NC) fire department. He also taught fire science and hazmat technology at Scott Community College, Harrisburg Community College, ahd Guilford Technical Community College. He's teaching and educating career was long and impressive.

Rick also was an author of "Tools of the Trade", a training and informative tool. Rick's service and teaching career spanned over 4 decades and his books continue to be used in training today.

It is fair to say, professionally, Rick touched and helped many more people than he ever realized or believed. He seemed to know everyone, or everyone knew of him across the country.

Rick was also an avid history buff; very knowledgeable and willing to share in this aspect of his life too. He enjoyed Living History and the educational aspect it offered. Plus, he liked dressing up !!

Unfortunately, Rick's career was shortened by health issues. A debilitating stroke, which he met bravely and with his usual humor left him with significant challenges.

Richard is survived by his wife, Cathy, his step sons, Craig and Chris and their families, 7 brothers and their families, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and many who loved and respected him.

Richard lived his life with a focus and determination which is to be admired. He was a loving, caring and unique person who touched countless lives. He is no longer bound by the constraints of a body that will not cooperate and for that we should rejoice.

Eternal Rest, Rich"tard", you will be missed.

Visitation will be held at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St John Neumann Catholic Church, 8451 Idlewild Rd, Charlotte, NC 28227, on September 2, 2026, at 11:00 am.

Rick will be laid to rest in Grove City, Pennsylvania.
