Sharon Kaye Grammer, 60, of Charlotte, North Carolina passed away from an 11 year diagnosis of stage four primary peritoneal cancer on Friday, August 16, 2019, at 7:07 pm at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 1, 1959 to Richard L. Grammer and Jeanette L. (McDonald) Grammer and is survived by both. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at age 16 and graduated from Arlington Baptist School in 1977. She married John L. Krueger, Jr., on December 13, 1980 and had daughter, Anna M. Krueger, and is survived by both. She is also survived by sister Sandra (Grammer) Scarfi and her husband Rico Scarfi, as well as brother Richard P. Grammer and his wife Jennifer (Agur) Grammer.
Sharon’s career included employment as an Executive Secretary for Peoples Drug Stores, in Alexandria, VA (prior to the company becoming CVS), as well as for a businessman in McLean, VA. Sharon then spent time employed as a court reporter for the United States Congress and Baltimore City Circuit Court. She was involved in the transcription of the vote count for the 2000 presidential election, as well as high profile cases such as the Oliver North trials. She was particularly appreciated for her fast typing speeds. She was also a beloved English and Typing teacher at Granite Baptist Church School in the early 90s, as well as a summer camp cook at Camp Pamadeva.
At age 40, Sharon returned to school to earn a paralegal degree, receiving a 4.0 grade point average (while also working full-time). She missed her own college graduation to attend her daughter’s college graduation in the year 2004. After earning her degree, she became a paralegal in the commercial real estate legal field.
Sharon also had a heart for the hurting. She formed Fighting Cancer, Inc. shortly after her own cancer diagnosis in 2008. Sharon and a team of volunteers were instrumental in providing encouragement to cancer patients, delivering “Sunshine” boxes of supplies and personal items, and organizing retreats that cancer survivors attended.
In her free time, Sharon enjoyed quilting, cross-stitching, genealogy research, puzzles, and ceramics. She had a fantastic sense of humor and a huge heart for others.
Her celebration of life service will be held at Pitts Baptist Church in Concord, North Carolina. Visitation hours are 1:00 - 2:45, with a 3:00 service on Saturday, August 24th, 2019.
Flowers may be sent to McEwen Funeral Home (7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227)
Or, in lieu of flowers: Sharon and her daughter spoke about her final wishes before her death. They discussed how fun (and therapeutic) it would be to have funds to execute random acts of kindness towards cancer patients and their families. Any funds donated to https://www.gofundme.com/f/sharongrammerslegacy will be used specifically to bless cancer patients and their families in honor of Sharon Grammer.
