

A native Floridian, Sonya was born in Lakeland, graduated from Lakeland High School and attended Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia. In 1956 she married Jack V. Kelley (d. 1996) and the two moved to Belleair, Florida where they raised their family. Sonya was a bundle of energy and an active force to so many - she was active at home, at church and in the community. Sonya was a member of PEO, Junior League, Privateers, the Morton Plant Mease Foundation and many other service organizations over the years. She was a deacon and an elder at Peace Memorial Church for many years in Clearwater, Fl and, after moving to North Carolina in 2015 she became a deacon at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Mint Hill. Her friendly smile, creative talents, and kind personality will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Sonya is survived by her children, Beth Barnwell (Mike), Debbie Connors, and Jay Kelley (Lisa); her grandchildren, Kevin Barnwell (Libby), Eric Barnwell (Ashley), Thomas Connors (Lauren), Mary Orrico (Don), Christy Priester (David), Catherine Ahearn (Nick), Joseph Kelley (Lana), Jack Kelley (Gaby), Justin Kelley SJ, Madeline Troncoso (John); her great-grandchildren, Cate Barnwell, Olivia Barnwell, Jake Barnwell, Tyler Barnwell, Caroline Connors, Margot Connors, Max Connors, Reagan Priester, Macie Priester, Annabella Orrico, Giovanni Orrico, Cecilia Orrico, Antonio Orrico, Aria Kelley, Maeve Ahearn, Max Ahearn, Juliet Ahearn, Charlotte Kelley, Jensie Kelley, Jackson Kelley, Lucy Kelley, Christopher Kelley, Genevieve Kelley, Rafael Troncoso, and Viviana Troncoso; her sister, M. Jay Sumner; her brother, Walter Smith; and many other loving extended family members.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Road, Mint Hill, NC. A reception will follow until 1:15 pm.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 in Safety Harbor, Florida for friends and family. Please contact the family or McEwen Mint Hill for details.
