He was born on August 30, 1944, to the late F.M. and Ruby Moser Helms.
Steve was a lifelong Union County native and attended Union High School. In his profession as a brick mason, Steve laid brick for many businesses and houses in Union County. Steve was also involved in prized poultry farming. Those who knew him will remember him for his love of his animals and the joy he experienced just sitting in the barn with friends and family visiting and sharing stories.
He also attended many poultry shows and loved meeting people that shared the same passion of excellence as he did. Steve also attended and was a member at Lee Park Baptist Church in Monroe, North Carolina.
Along with his parents, Steve is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Griffin Helms, sister, Brenda Helms Strippy; and brother, Herman Carson Helms. He is survived by his daughter, Tonya Helms (Ed); grandchildren, Maria Helms; Christian Helms, Hanna Sephorah Alway, Jesse Alway, and Sadie Helms; mother-in-law, Sarah Griffin; nieces, Ginger Shaffer, and Jennifer Prickett; nephew, Scott Funderburk; caretaker, Jose Perez; as many multiple cousins and friends.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026, from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, located at 204 South Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina. A funeral service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held following the visitation at 12:45 pm in the McEwen Colonial Chapel. Burial will then follow the service at Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe, North Carolina.
