Sybil Ann Brigman passed September 24, 2026, at the age of 83. She was born November 3, 1942, to parents Paul Fletcher Brigman and Ona Blake Carriker Brigman. Sybil was preceded in death by brothers William “Bill” Paul Brigman (d. 2022) and Robert Wayne Brigman (d. 2023), and nephew Timothy Wayne Brigman (d. 2025).
Sybil leaves behind daughters Sybil Michele Greene and Kyla Jones Sipprell; granddaughters Blake Caroline Leggett (27), Avery Lynn Leggett (23), Cayson Shea Sipprell (23), Caleigh Sarah Sipprell (21), Jessie Michele Leggett (18), and Tyler Marie Leggett (16); sister Jean Grigston Groon; sister-in- law Linda Little Brigman; and nephews and nieces Robert Grigston, Glenda Homola, Sylvia Berry, and Danny Brigman.
Sybil grew up on the family farm in Matthews, North Carolina, and attended East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte. She met Kyle Chester Jones on a blind date in the summer of 1965 and married him in June 1966. They settled in Kyle’s hometown of Boone, where Sybil worked at Appalachian State University. Michele was born in 1967 and Kyla in 1971. Sybil relocated to Chapel Hill in 1987 where she worked as a licensed realtor. Sybil always missed the mountains, so she moved to Asheville in 1998 after both daughters completed graduate school.
Sybil bought a historic home on Gracelyn Road in Asheville and spent the next 28 years welcoming her girls and six granddaughters to spend special time with her in her beloved mountains and neighborhood. Sybil especially loved taking care of her granddaughters and spent countless afternoons through the years picnicking and watching them play on the long, sloping Vista directly overlooking Biltmore House. She also attended and participated in every birthday and major event, frequently driving hours multiple times monthly to be sure she did not miss anything and that they all knew how important they were to her. Sybil also loved to travel with family and was blessed to visit and tour many US cities and states, as well as France, Italy, and the UK in recent years. Holden Beach, NC, was extremely dear to Sybil, and she spent time there almost every summer of her adult life.
Before their deaths, Sybil prioritized spending time with her parents and assisted in caring for them in their old age, particularly her mother. Sybil later oversaw the care of her brother Bill during the last twenty years of his life, devoting enormous energy to his well-being. Sybil forever remained close to her siblings and business partners Jean and Wayne.
Sybil had many dear friends in Asheville, including David Auldredge, Audrey Parton, and Kathleen Anderson. She also remained close to her cousins in the Matthews area and spent hours driving to spend time with them even into her eighties. Family attorney Bob Henderson was Sybil’s trusted advisor and good friend for over 25 years as Sybil managed the family real estate interests in Matthews.
By far Sybil worked hardest at being a loving mother to Michele and Kyla. She was mother and father and best friend. She is entirely irreplaceable and will be missed by her girls every day.
Sybil shared many grateful thoughts during her last days, including “83 wonderful years with my family doing things that I never dreamed of as a simple farm girl…”
A memorial service for Sybil will be held at 1pm on October 18 at McEwen-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd, Charlotte, following which Sybil’s ashes will be interred at the foot of her mother’s grave at Sunset Memory Gardens.
