Sylvia J Smith

Sylvia Smith was born In Charlotte, NC September 25, 1940 to Clarence & Bernice James. She graduated from Central High School and continued to Business School in Charlotte. Sylvia had a successful career in office management and marketing for various industries. While working for Sealtest Dairy in 1958, she met the love of her life, John Smith. They were married in 1960 and began to create a family. Sylvia and John recently celebrated 66 years of marriage.

Sylvia was also a child of GOD and a willing servant for his Word. In 1969, She became deeply involved at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church in Matthews, NC. She faithfully participated in nearly every church function and event, where she lovingly gave of her talents for decades. She shared her love of Christ through her gift of cooking, her work in missions, and her dedication to mentoring teens in youth ministry and music.

Her dedication to family, friends and church was a defining part of her life, as she faithfully gave her time, talents, love, and prayers to others.

Sylvia is survived by her Husband, John Smith; Daughter, Bonnie Collins; Son, Terry Smith, and wife, Dana Chastain; Daughter-in-law, Leah Smith, Six grandchildren, Seventeen Great Grandchildren, and Sister-in-law Carolyn James.

She is predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Bernice James; Brother, Joseph”Joe” James, (husband to Carolyn James); Son, Randy Smith, (husband to Leah Smith); and Son-in-law, Greg Collins, (husband to Bonnie Collins).

Visitation will be held at Mount Harmony Baptist Church, 2817 Mt Harmony Church Road, Matthews, NC 28105, on May 5, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 am at the same location.

A Committal Service will take place at Mount Harmony Baptist Church, 2817 Mt Harmony Church Road, Matthews, NC 28105, on May 5, 2026; the Committal will immediately follow.
