Thomas Britt "Tommy" Funderburk

The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010 at McEwen – Mint Hill Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Dale Shields officiating. A private interment will be held at Sunset Memory Gardens.

Tommy was born February 14, 1944 in Rock Hill, SC, the son of the late Lucille and Carl Funderburk. In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by his wife, Maureen O. Funderburk and his brother, Gerald “Pug” Funderburk. He moved with his family to Charlotte in the early 1950’s and was a 1962 graduate of Garringer High School. Following high school, Tommy was employed by Lucent Technology (Western Electric) from which he retired after 41 years of service. Tommy’s love of life and his story-telling will be in the hearts of his friends forever. He was an avid golfer and shagger. Eastwood Golf Course was his second home until it was demolished. Tommy won many local and CGA tournaments during his golfing years and made a hole-in-one at Eastwood #10 on May 23, 1998. Tommy was the self-proclaimed social director of the shagging world in Charlotte during his high school years and he continued his love for the dance into his adult life. He was inducted into the Charlotte Area Shagger's Hall of Fame where he was a Charter Board Member. The Pavilion at N. Myrtle Beach (O.D.) was always his favorite place to be whenever he was at the beach.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Pate Funderburk; son, Glenn B. Funderburk and his wife, Brandy; daughter, Ashley A. Funderburk and Mike Eckert; daughter, Sarah E. Funderburk and Gary Dunlap; step-son, Michael Farrior and his wife, Rachel; grandchildren, Taliah and Zya Dunlap, Kinley Britt Funderburk, and Brooke Farrior; sister, Ellen F. Stroud; and Tommy’s faithful companion, Jake.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Hall of Fame Foundation, Attn: Eddie Monsour, 2738 Colgate Dr., Fayetteville, NC 28304 or the Beth Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund, 5111 N. Kings Hwy., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
