Jack was born to Walter Dewey and Nola Irene Roper Orren on March 7, 1923, in Belmont, North Carolina, the second of six children. He attended Belmont High School and graduated in the class of 1940.
He retired from Johnson Motor Lines in Charlotte, North Carolina, as a freight checker.
Jack met the love of his life, Verla Mae Honeycutt and they enjoyed a happy marriage lasting 69 years.
Jack proudly served his country during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of the U.S Marine Corps. Jack was with the First Marine Division under General Alexander Pendergrift in assaults on Tulagi, Gavutu, Tanmanbogo, Guada Canal, Florida and the British Soloman Islands.
Jack was a member of Indian Trail Presbyterian Church and served as deacon and treasurer. He was a 50 year member of NCHA/FCRV Camping Clubs members of Mecklenbugs and Stanly Trailblazers.
Jack was predeceased by his wife, Verla, and son, Don. He also was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Nola; sisters, Margaret and Mary; and brothers, Bill and Charles.
He is survived by his daughter, Beverly and her husband, Walt; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Lori (Chris), David (Julie), Rebecca and Jennifer (Mike); great-grandchildren, Michael, Tyler, Nicholas, Amber (Jordan), Corey, Cassidy, Aiden, Elizabeth, Kelly, Nick, Will, Abby and Jonathan; and great-great-granddaughters, Lilly, Carly and Aubrey. Also surviving are his brother, Larry (Brenda); and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 1:00 until 2:00 pm Saturday afternoon, July 21, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, with a funeral service to immediately follow at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Pastor Jody Wetta will officiate. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park, with military honors.
