William Paul ”Bill” Turner , 93, of Charlotte, NC, passed away Friday, March 16, 2018. Bill was born in Charlotte, NC on November 12, 1924 to John and Onie Turner. He attended Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
Bill enlisted in the Army on April 23, 1943 and served in the 158th Combat Engineer Battalion, serving in Normandy, Rhineland, and Ardennes fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Eamet Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars and the Liberation of France Medal. After being honorably discharged from the service, he returned to Charlotte where he met and married, Winifred Fleenor on March 22, 1946. He was employed with Mack Trucks in Charlotte as a Truck Mechanic and worked for 30 years before retiring. Bill always had a passion for automobiles and trucks and was always willing to lend a helping hand. After retirement he and Winifred loved spending time traveling and camping with good friends.
He was a member of the Newell Masonic Lodge 739 where he served as Master in 1995, the Scottish Rite Bodies, The 158th Combat Engineers Association, The Ramblin Squares and Woodmen of the World. He was also an active member of Robinson Presbyterian Church for many years, where he served as a Deacon and Elder Emeritus, and then Back Creek ARP Church, where he was a member of the Senior Citizens Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife Winifred Turner. He is survived by his cousin, Darlene Banker and her husband, Ardie, their children, and many other cousins and friends.
Funeral arrangements will be held at McEwen in Mint Hill, Friday, March 23, 2018. Family will receive friends from 1-2 and then the ceremony will begin at 2:00. Burial will follow at Charlotte Memorial Gardens.
