Alpha Bettis Combs, 100, of Apison went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Monday, April 2, 2024 at her home. She was born July 3, 1923 to the late Elmer and Belle Bettis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Arlie Combs, son, Michael Anthony Combs, son-in-law, Bo Cameron, great granddaughter, Jordan Cordwell, sisters, Frances Jordan, Angeline Robinson, Josephine Bailey, and Virginia Neely.
She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and vacation bible school. She also sang in the choir and with the Old Ladies Trio. Visiting with shut ins and people in nursing homes, especially those without family was very important to her. Mrs. Combs was a volunteer teacher with the READ program teaching adults to read. During the early 1940’s Alpha worked in Oak Ridge at the Y-12 plant on the production of the atomic bomb. She was proud to tell everyone of her work there and how it helped to end World War II. In July 2023, she was interviewed by Channel 9 News anchor, Josh Roe about her work there for the Cost of Freedom segment.
Survivors include her daughters, Beverly Cameron and Rhonda (Butch) Rogers, grandchildren, Chris Gibson, Stephanie Gibson, Lindsey Cameron and Ashley (Kevin) Cordwell, great grandchildren, Josh Gibson, Jake (Heather) Gibson, Sarah Grace (Grant) Barkley, Sam (Emily) Gibson, Anna Claire Gibson, Ethan Hurley, Stephen Lanier, Lexie Cordwell, and Brianna Cordwell, great great grandson, Theo Barkley.
