

Brenda Hooks Myers, 80, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2023, in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. Brenda led a joyful life filled with faith, family, and friends. She was David’s beloved wife for more than 58 years.
She was raised in the Mississippi Delta in Greenwood. She graduated from Mississippi College. She was active in the Baptist Student Union, Latin Club, YWA, and other extra curriculum activities.
Following their marriage, they moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Brenda taught at Westport High School while David acquired his seminary degree. They moved to Florence, South Carolina, where their children were born. Moving back to Mississippi, they were appointed by the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Christian Social Ministries. Brenda’s ministry included English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Reading and Writing, placement of unaccompanied minors from Vietnam, prayer, as well as being very active in her local church teaching and singing in the choir.
Upon moving to Chattanooga, Brenda continued her volunteer ministry of ESL as well as training many volunteers to teach ESL among the Baptist churches. For fifteen years she also taught English and Latin at the Red Bank High School. After retirement from teaching, she served as lay chaplain with Alexian Village for a number of years. In later years they resided in Williamsburg, Kentucky. She began and led a care-givers Alzheimer’s support group.
Fully engaged with people, Brenda lived her life always sharing joy and God’s love. She loved people and her smile cheered and warmed all who saw her.
Brenda is survived by her husband; children and grandchildren: Ande (Michelle) Myers, Daniel, Andrew, Kenya; and Marley (Stephen) Gardner, Emory, Gracie; and a family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and brother and sisters-in-law.
Brenda was preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Lucile Hooks, brother, Maurice Hooks, and sister, Judith McLain.
The funeral service will be at 12 Noon on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at First Baptist Church, Chattanooga, Tennessee, with a visitation beginning one hour prior to the service.
A private burial will be held in Mendenhall, Mississippi.
