Gene’s love of music and dedication were evident from an early age. At Rockwood High School, he played football and basketball, and he was also a devoted member of the high school band—often marching in halftime shows while still wearing his football uniform. Because of his love of music and hours of practice on the saxophone, he was awarded a full scholarship to college. Gene graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education.
Gene devoted himself to helping others learn and thrive. He taught band at Cumberland County High School in Crossville, TN for seven years, influencing dozens of future musicians across the globe. In 1966, he began a rewarding career as an insurance professional in the Chattanooga area for 35 years with steady commitment and integrity.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and Fred Russell, father Bruce Barnard, and brother Dr. Larry Russell. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Penny Petrey Barnard; his devoted children Eve Kym (Mel), Amie Landrus (Rod), and Philip Barnard; his adoring grandchildren Nate Lawson (Aileen), Maggie Garcia (Steven), and Levi Landrus (fiancé Emma White); his precious great grandchildren Charlee Garcia, and Parker and Jordan Lawson; his beloved brother Dr. Gerald Russell (Brenda), and loving sister-in-law Brenda Russell (Larry). Gene was well loved by many nieces, nephews, and In-laws.
A die-hard Tennessee Volunteer, Gene especially treasured UT football games shared with his brothers, children, and grandchildren. He also enjoyed summer RV excursions with his beloved wife and son, and he held favorite memories of golfing and fishing with children and grandchildren in beautiful Lake Placid, Florida. Gene loved listening to music, attending concerts, and discussing all the oldies—always with the same warm humor and genuine interest that made time with him so meaningful.
For 40 years, Gene was a faithful member of City Church of Chattanooga, where he served as an elder, small group leader and member. He also gave his time to civic groups and community organizations, including serving as past-president of the Chattanooga Boys Choir.
The family is grateful for Hospice of Chattanooga and all caregivers and nurses as well as City Church and Chattanooga Funeral Home. Memorial contributions in Gene's honor may be made to The Myositis Association at : www.myositis.org or City Church of Chattanooga at: www.thecitychurch.cc
