

Marcia Katherine Shields Young, 66, of Chattanooga, TN, passed away on Saturday October27th after a long battle with Fredrick’s Ataxia, a degenerative neuromuscular disease. Marcia was the daughter of Randall and Marian Shields of Kingston, Tenn. and was born in Hannibal, Mo. on August 2, 1946. She graduated from Roane County High School in 1964 and from Tennessee Technological University in 1968 with a degree in Sociology. On November 23, 1968, Marcia married Ronald E. Young, who survives her. Early in their marriage, she was employed as a teacher in the Limestone County Alabama School System and as a social worker for the Alabama Department of Human Resources. After the birth of their daughters, she became a full time homemaker, a noble profession. A lifelong Presbyterian, she was most recently a member of the New Hope Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga. In addition to her husband, Marcia is survived by her mother Marian Shields of Kingston; her daughters, Laurie (Leon) Storie of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Sarah (Daniel) Thomas of Montevallo, Alabama.; granddaughter Amelia Katherine Thomas and step granddaughters Elizabeth and Lydia Storie, and sister Glenna Shields of Alexandria, Virginia. Her father Randall and sister Micalyn Shields preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the New Hope Presbyterian 7301 Shallowford Rd Chattanooga with the Rev. Keith Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Friederich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA), P.O. Box 1537, Springfield, VA 22151, or to the National Ataxia Foundation (NAF), 2600 Fernbrook Lane North, Suite 119, Minneapolis, MN 55447-4752. Arrangements are by the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 7414 Old Lee Highway.
