Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was a wonderful homemaker who took great pride in caring for her family and making a warm and welcoming home. She had a special gift for gardening and truly had a “green thumb.” She loved working in her flowers and could make almost anything grow. Her beautiful gardens were a reflection of the love and care she put into everything she did.
Mary also enjoyed sewing and knitting and was always happiest when she was keeping her hands busy creating something for someone she loved. Her talents, kindness, and love for her family will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
Mrs. Shell faithfully served the Lord for many years as a Sunday school teacher at Avondale Baptist Church. She was also a member of Morris Hill Baptist Church. Her faith and service were an important part of her life, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to her family and her Lord.
She is survived by her son, Danny Ray Shell (Linda) of Maryville, TN; her daughter, Deborah York (David) of Chattanooga, TN; four grandchildren, Devin York, Matthew Shell, Clayton Shell, and Dana Ramirez; four great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Isabella, Ashlyn, and Nevaeh; and several nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dee and Estella Jeffery; her brothers, Jerome Jeffery, Lester Jeffery, and Ronnie Jeffery; and her sisters, Ruby Hickman, Geraline Prieto, Joyce Dow, and Katie Harrison.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 29, 2026, with the funeral service beginning at 12:00 noon.
Interment will follow at Lakewood Memory Gardens East.
Mary Evelyn will be deeply missed, but the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the beautiful memories she created will remain in the hearts of her family and friends. Her garden may no longer have her hands tending it, but the seeds of love she planted in the lives of those around her will continue to grow for generations to come.
