Melvin Barnes, age 85 , of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, August 22, 2013. Mr. Barnes was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during World War II and Korea. He retired from TVA after 30 years of employment. Mr. Barnes was a longtime member and deacon of MeadowView Baptist Church. He enjoyed golf and bowling. He was proud of the fact that he bowled a “perfect game.”
Preceded in death by loving wife of 50 years, Christine Simmons Barnes; brother and four sisters.
Survived by son, Kent (Jill) Barnes of Chattanooga; daughter, Dr. Kristy (Tri) Barnes Le of High Point, North Carolina; son, Paul (Chas) Barnes of Chattanooga; five grandchildren, Jameson Barnes, Garrett Le, Jacqueline Le, Abrielle and Addison Coleman; two brothers Euell and Malcolm Barnes; several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 1 PM at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. Al Miller officiating. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 26, 2013 from 4 PM to 7 PM at the funeral home.
