Nicholas C. Kazanas

June 22, 1940July 20, 2020

Nicholas Constantine Kazanas, 80, of Ooltewah, TN passed away on July 20, 2020, at his home.

Nick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, coach and friend. He often said his proudest achievement was his family and he loved watching his grandchildren grow. Nick is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Judith Kazanas, his children Marc & Michelle Kazanas (John, Nicholas, Katherine, and Elizabeth), Matthew & Marybeth Kazanas (Annabelle, Caroline, and Amelia), Nadeem & Nancy Kazanas Moughrabi (Mason, Eleanor, and Joseph), his brother in law, Tom Lainis, and many nieces and nephews. Nick is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Katherine Kazanas, his brother, Danny Kazanas, and his sister, Daisy Lainis.

Nick was born in Jamaica, NY, in June of 1940. At an early age he developed a deep love of sports, especially his NY Yankees, which he passed on to all his children. Nick graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Lafayette College and a Master’s Degree from University of Hartford and went onto have a successful career. He began that career as an engineer with United Technologies where he was proud to contribute on the development of the Apollo moon suit. A natural leader, he transitioned into the Managerial ranks with GPU Nuclear and led a post-accident response team at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant. In 1986, he became the Vice President of Completion Assurance with TVA Nuclear and was responsible for getting units at Watts Bar, Sequoyah and Browns Ferry on-line, delivering clean and reliable power to the Tennessee Valley.

Nick is already deeply missed by his family and friends. The family will have a private memorial in celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the American Heart Association.

Nick was a wonderful neighbor and very dear friend. Larry and I spent many happy times with Nick and Judi playing cards and going out to dinners. Nick with his humor will be missed. Our prayers go out to Judi and all the family. Sending all our love to everyone.

I am very sorry to learn of Nick's death. I had the privilege of working for Nick at TVA in Chattanooga. He was a gifted manager who was well-respected by everyone. He provided us with a very helpful tool called the Daily Planner which we used to record and manage our activities. I still use mine. My prayers are with Nick's family.

I worked with Nick at Bellefonte. We was a great leader who did everything he could to make the completion of Bellefonte possible. He demonstrated honestly and integrity in everything he did and treated everyone with kindness and respect. He was a true gentleman and I am fortunate to have known him as a boss and a friend. He will be missed.

I will always remember Nick as a friend, a fellow exerciser at our clubhouse swimming pool, and playing "Hand and Foot" card games with Judi and him. I am thankful for his teaching me the correct way to say Merry Christmas in modern Greek. This occurred at the swimming pool shortly before Christmas a couple years ago.
And so I say Kala Christouyenah, philos mou. Sue and I will miss you.
