

He was born on December 22nd in Giles County, Tennessee, to Mary Walls Newton and Tully Henderson Newton. He was raised in the Giles County area, working hard plowing fields and later going to work for the county highway department at the age of fifteen. He joined the Army in 1945, serving until 1947. He married the love of his life and his partner of sixty-one years, Frances Jalane Hooie in 1949.
He worked all his adult life, with the exception of the last six years, as a heavy equipment operator. He was known across the country as one of the best finish road grader operators, working his last thirty two years for Thomas Brothers Construction Company.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, preaching on a part-time basis at several churches, including the Sunday service on the day he fell ill.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Tully and his two brothers, Brown and Gerome.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Frances Newton, son and daughter–in-law, Justin and Stephanie Newton, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Bill Walton officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Hixson, TN.
The family will receive friends from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
