Kevin we all still miss you everyday. What I would give to be able to go back to our last phone call, I’ve replayed it in my head a billion times.  You will forever be in my thoughts and my heart . I love you and miss you.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it's the memories of you that are the most precious.

My deepest condolences. Specialist Paulson worked for me on many ocassions and was one of my favorite Soldiers. When I needed to accomplish a mission I would request him specifically because I knew he would give me 100%. I only had the opportunity to sit down and talk with him a couple times and he was a great guy. 

I don't get the chance to share this story often but I think now is appropriate seeing as I wont get another chance. I would inspect every Soldier coming to our unit and he was the only one I did not find something wrong with uniform wise and when I approached him he immediately stood at the proper position of 'parade rest' when speaking to me as a Noncommissioned Officer. His professional appearance and unwaivering respect made my week. I was proud to call him an American Soldier and with time a friend. Again my deepest sympathies...

It was really an honor serving with you and i know you are smiling down on us.

I'll never forget that Facebook message from Wags that told me that Miguel needed to call her because something bad had happened to you. She didn't say "there was an accident" or "he's in the hospital". I knew you were gone. It's been really hard this Memorial Day. I've lost a lot of friends in the war, and being around the Mikes, we all are too aware that coming home isn't a guarantee. You went way too soon, my friend.

I remember the talks we had; some serious, some absolutely absurd and hysterical. We plotted pranks and you were like the brother I always wanted. I had hoped when I came to the East Coast to visit later in the fall, that perhaps we could go for ice cream and catch up.

I had in my mind that we would be friends when we were old and cantankerous. You, Miguel, and our other "Army family" would tell stories about the crazy times we had. Life is way too short. 

I feel like I let you down. I should have been there more for you after I moved away. I'm so very, very sorry, Kevin that I wasn't there for you as much as I used to be. The world will be a dimmer place without you.

I hope you are in a better place now. You and your family are always in my thoughts and prayers.

My condolences go out to the Paulson family in this trying time. To his widow, his parents and all his siblings - you have my deepest sympathy. He was one of my battle buddies and I was proud to work with him. It took both me and my wife hard to hear of his loss. Know that you do not grieve alone. Kevin, I'm gonna miss that stupid grin of yours. I wish too late that I'd gotten in touch with ye sooner.

A brother is someone you grow up with. He is a lifelong friend. He is someone you will fight with, but always forgive. Someone you grow old with. But most importantly, I think, a brother is an everlasting friend. That is what makes brothers so special. You watch each other change, and mature, and slowly put the pieces of your lives together. You inherently trust a brother, and you know if either needs the other, then help will come. Perhaps friends come and go, but brothers are forever – forever and priceless. There is nothing like the relationship you share with a brother. 
Last Sunday- I got news that changed by life forever. I'll never get the answers to the questions that run threw my head. I certainly took him  for granted before, but I never imagined losing him.. Now that he is gone, I understand what a wonderful gift Kevin was. This is a lesson of loss that should always be taught, but never learned. Normally, a sibling is, by definition, assumed – they are simply there, until they are gone, and then they become a gift. A gift that is lost.
And so now I feel sad. I am devastated and empty. Kevin's death has left a hole in my life, and, also I imagine, in many of yours. You never know what you have until it's gone. Losing is always so much harder than simply not having. 
 Kevin really was a great brother. We did not always get along, but I don't know any brothers that do. Remember Harry & I would be playing baseball & you would be at train tracks getting snakes & bugs to chase the girls. Things got so much better as we both grew older. After high school he wanted to go into the Army we were able at that time talk him out of it. 5 years ago he brought the idea again- week after he told us he had already signed up & was leaving in November. I was so upset but I knew we couldn't change he's mind- so my anger quickly turned into happiness. I was so excited that I can say I had a brother in the army defending our country. I was so proud of him! He was so anxious for your first deployment to Afghanistan. I'll always remember our phone conversions about sending care packages- usually consisting of junk food which consists of Fannie Mae, chips & sausage.
I cannot tell you enough how Thankful I am for giving us your daughter Angela. I remember rushing to the hospital on 7/4 due to Ang being breech – you were so nervous to be a daddy! But you were the best daddy you could be with her. I will always cherished the memories & tell them to her. She will never forget you. 

Something else I never told Kevin was how highly I thought of him. During his adult life I can't remember him ever complaining, nor getting angry. Some of the flaws that I dislike most in myself; Kevin simply had that easy-going nature. I don't know how he did it. 
It's funny because I told people how great my brother was, but I never told him. I don't regret this, but I hope he knew. I loved my brother very much. I am going to miss him, more than I can imagine.

My heart is filled with great sadness, as I remember the young boy who together with my son, did so many mischevious acts, we laughed about as adults.  I will always remember your smile, your laughter and your kindness.  You will be missed!

Kevin.... Where can I start!! I can not sit here & ask why... I will ALWAYS treasure our memories!! The only comfort I have is that many loved ones are with you-- i hope that you find happiness!! I wish I could have told you how proud I am of you.. You will always be honored for what you did for our country!!  As Angela grows up I will always remind her how she will always be daddy's little girl & all memories you had w her will be talked about!!
