Anne M. (Janecko) Sakmar, 96, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2012, surrounded by her family and welcomed into Heaven by a loving God in whom she had great faith. She was born in Whitney, PA, to a couple who had immigrated from Austria Hungary, the third of six children. Anne moved with her parents as a child in 1925 to New Britain Conn., where she graduated from high school, worked in a manufacturing plant, and also as a child care provider to families along the Connecticut River. The Great Depression and the economic needs of her family precluded her dream of attending school to become a nurse. She met and married Charles B. Sakmar in 1938 and settled in Stamford, Conn where they lived and raised two children.
While living in Stamford, Anne was active in the life of her church, St. Benedict’s, where she held positions in the Rosary and Altar Society, as well and various womens groups, serving the church and it’s parishoners. She was known for her pastry baking, and her cookies, nut and poppyseed rolls which were treasured when given as gifts or shared as holiday treats for her family and friends. She was also an expert seamstress and homemaker. Her work history while in Stamford included administrative positions at several companies, and because of her outgoing personality, genuine warmth, and administrative competence, she earned the respect and friendship of many co-workers. Because of her love of immediate and extended family, frequent trips to various New England cities were made to her brothers and sisters, who always looked forward to those visits which became occasions for large family gatherings.
In early 1970, Anne and Charles left Connecticut and moved to California to be nearer their children, and settled in Long Beach. Anne was employed at the corporate offices of Purex, Inc., where she assisted in the publications department, and continued to enjoy her new life on the west coast. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, sharing her home with several of her grandchildren attending school in the greater Los Angeles area. After the death of her husband, she retired and divided her time between her daughter and son in Los Angeles and Coronado.
Anne is survived by her children: Carol Holland (Glenn) Zinser and Bernard F. (Madeline) Sakmar; 5 grandchildren - Marianna Holland Cochran, John D. Holland IV, Christopher M. Sakmar, Denise Holland Hawkins, and Gregory D. Sakmar; 6 greatgrandchildren - Dylan Hawkins, Cory Hawkins, Grace Caroline Hawkins, Charles Sakmar, William Sakmar, and John D. Holland V, and a number of nieces and nephews. Anne was predeceased by her husband Charles B. Sakmar, brothers Joseph Janecko, Stephen Janecko, George Farcash, Katherine Farcash Paradise, and Elizabeth Farcash Kowalski.
A rosary, will be recited at 7:00pm on Wednesday, April 18 at Sacred Heart Church with a Mass of Resurrection celebrating her life on Thursday, April 19 at 11:00a.m., also at Sacred Heart Church. A reception will follow in the parish hall immediately after the service. A private burial will will be held in Long Beach, CA.
