

died peacefully April 2, 2017 in San Diego, CA.
She was born in Spokane, Washington to William Sydney Russell and
Grace Cunningham Russell on April 26, 1930. She grew up in Boulder
City, Nevada where her father was the photographer for the Hoover
Dam. Barbara attended the University of Nevada Reno and the
University of Southern California where she received a degree in
occupational therapy. For many years she taught special education for
the El Cajon school district. She loved her students and was always so
pleased when they came back to visit her as adults.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents and also her sisters, Patricia
Russell Lappin and Claire Russell Hurley. She is survived by her niece,
Penny Lester of Boulder, CO, her nephew David Lappin of Urbandale,
IA. Great nephews John Bradley of Boulder, CO and Michael Lappin of
Asheville, NC, great niece Amy DeLoux of Chula Vista, CA, great, great
nephew Max Bradley of Boulder, CO and brother-in-law Stanley Hurley
of Chula Vista, CA.
Barbara was a lifetime animal lover, never meeting a stray she didn’t
want to help. Although Barbara requested no services, donations in
her name to the San Diego Feral Cat Coalition at 9528 Miramar Road
PMB 160 San Diego, CA 92126 or the San Diego County Department
of Animal Services at 5821 Sweetwater Rd Bonita, CA 91902 are
appreciated.
