
Bernard J. Eggertsen, 100, of La Mesa California passed away August 17, 2023. He was born and grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School, and was a physician for many years.
During World War II he served as a doctor in the US Army. He and his wife Marion, were stationed in Albuquerque, NM where their first daughter Anne was born, and in Lexington, KY where they welcomed their son, Cliff.
Following his military service, the family moved west to San Francisco for his further training at Children's’ Hospital, San Francisco The family welcomed the arrival of their third child, and second daughter, Paula. Bernard went into private practice and the family eventually settled in the San Diego area and their third daughter, Lynn completed the set of four children.
Barney, as he was known to many, was always curious and never stopped learning during his long and interesting life. He was well read, a patron of the arts, an avid world traveler, a philanthropist, a sports fan and he enjoyed graham crackers (split the long way) with a glass of milk. He spent the last decades of his life with his companion Florence Nemkov in pursuit of their shared interests.
He was predeceased by his parents, Simon Bernard Eggertsen. and Florence Purdie Eggertsen, his brother Dean Edwin Eggertsen and by Florence Nemkov.
He is survived by Marion, the mother of his four children, and by his son Clifford and daughters Anne, Paula and Lynn.
No services are planned at this time.
At a future date, a memorial will be placed at the Eggertsen plot in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
