Jeanne was an extraordinary woman who held a special place in my heart, akin to that of a second mother. Her nurturing presence played a pivotal role in raising both my brother and me. Every Sunday, we would attend church together, adorned in beautiful dresses curated by Jeanne herself. During the worship services, I would often find myself captivated by her perfectly manicured nails, delicately exploring them with my fingertips.
In addition to our spiritual bond, Jeanne would diligently pick us up from school, always prepared with a refreshing snack and chilled water waiting in the car. Upon arriving home, we would retreat to a cozy nook where we would diligently complete our homework. Jeanne, ever the multitasker, would either indulge in episodes of Judge Judy or immerse herself in her computer tasks, readily offering her assistance whenever we required it.
Jeanne possessed a remarkable ability to shower me with affectionate hugs and genuine compliments on a daily basis. She consistently instilled within me the belief that I would blossom into a beautiful and intelligent Latina. Her unwavering encouragement served as a catalyst for building my self-confidence, and as a result, I have come to embrace my identity as a confident and accomplished Latina woman. I am forever grateful for Jeanne's empowering words and the transformative impact they have had on my life.
Words cannot adequately express the depth of our shared memories, my profound affection for Jeanne, and the immeasurable gratitude I hold for her presence in my life.

I also imagine that Mom is enjoying her reunion with family on the other side.  But I miss her even as I know she is in a better place.

Bev was a great secretary for the GCCCD governing board.  I enjoyed working in the same office.

My imaginations of Beverly Jeanne's Departure

 

She slips out quietly in the night, before April dawns. She takes nothing, leaving all perfectly in its place.

 

Slippers at the foot of the bed.  Wheelchair poised. Computer off. Bookmark peeking out. Letters neatly stacked. Almond Royals and therapeutic lotion and lipstick and brush hidden in the upper and middle drawers. Fan whirring. Tepid water undrunk.  Five generations peer from photos on the wall and bureau and desk and hall dresser  each unaware of this moment. If she spoke, they might try to stop her tug at her night gown, kiss her cheek, cling to her bony hands hug her shoulders  and where would her resolve be then?  How could she leave?  No, this is best, as it should be.

 

She looks back, briefly, to see her own white curls, relaxed mouth, closed eyes and small wrinkled hands aged to 90, now peacefully resting on a spread of patterned lilacs and quilted white.  She does not need them.  Weightless and pain-free, she accepts her mother's hand. It has been oh so long, how she's missed her Mama. Now the distance of years collapses, swallowed by Love. She should go. Her flight is unannounced, but anticipated.  She is ready  calls made, notes written, prayers said. She grins in girlish glee,  winks at her companion and dances into the joyful light. She is singing.  My Grandma Bev, mother of two, grandmother to four, great grandmother to sixteen, great-great grandmother to one is singing.  And her voice is beautiful. She sings and dances into the open arms of her sister Shirley and her cousin LaDonna I've never seen her happier.
