Carlos Herrera Rios

Carlos Herrera Rios of San Diego, California, was a wonderful man, a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who passed away on Monday, November 29, 2021 at the age of 77. During his final days, Carlos was surrounded by his family, who cared deeply for him.

Carlos was born July 3, 1944 to Manuel “Fernando” and Dolores Rios in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico and was the eldest of four. As a teenager he moved with his parents and siblings to San Ysidro, California. He met the love of his life, Gloria, in 1963. They subsequently married on April 24, 1971. Together they had four children: Carlos, Pedro, Gaby, and Fernanda.

Carlos worked as a pipe welder at NASSCO for over 27 years. He was a proud member of the Iron Workers union, and often during his career, he held picket signs in defense of his labor rights.

Carlos practiced his faith by helping others. For years he delivered bread to needy families and supported the Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul community groups at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Parish. His children, each in their ways, continue his legacy of caring for others through their commitment in their volunteer time and in their professions.

Carlos enjoyed spending time with his family. He cherished spending time with them, while on vacation, on weekends, and after work. He was proud of his children’s accomplishments. Carlos was a man that wasn’t afraid to show his care and love for this family. His siblings saw him as a father figure.

Carlos also had seven grandkids who meant the world to him. Every time he saw them, he didn't want them to leave. He enjoyed any time he got to spend with them, such as birthday celebrations, holidays, and family gatherings. He loved them, and they loved their Tata.

Carlos is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria Rios; his children and their spouses, Carlos and Heather, Pedro and Angélica, Gaby and Hector, and Fernanda and Enrique; and his seven grandchildren, Teotzin, Nayeli, Joaquin, Antonio, Metzli, Xavier, and Ollin, and his siblings, Eddie and Eva Rios.

A visitation for Carlos will be held Monday, December 13, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM at Funeraria del Angel Chula Vista, 753 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA 91910. A mass for Carlos will occur Tuesday, December 14, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 2020 Alaquinas Dr, San Ysidro, CA 92173. A burial for Carlos will follow from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Holy Cross Cemetery & Mausoleum, 4470 Hilltop Dr, San Diego, CA 92102.

Carlos Herrera Ríos de San Diego, California, fue un hombre maravilloso, un esposo, padre, abuelo, hermano y amigo cariñoso, que falleció el lunes 29 de noviembre de 2021 a la edad de 77 años. Durante sus últimos días, Carlos fue rodeado por su familia, que lo querían profundamente.

Carlos nació el 3 de julio de 1944 en Tijuana, Baja California, México. Sus padres fueron Manuel “Fernando” y Dolores Ríos y era el mayor de cuatro. Cuando era adolescente se mudó con sus padres y hermanos a San Ysidro, California. Conoció al amor de su vida, Gloria, en San Diego en el año 1963. Posteriormente se casaron el 24 de abril de 1971. Juntos tuvieron cuatro hijos: Carlos, Pedro, Gaby, y Fernanda.

Carlos trabajó como soldador en NASSCO por más de 27 años. Era un miembro orgulloso del sindicato de Trabajadores del Hierro y, a menudo, durante su carrera, sostenía carteles en los piquetes en defensa de sus derechos laborales.

Carlos practicó su fe ayudando a otros. Durante años entregó pan a familias necesitadas y apoyó a los grupos comunitarios de Caballeros de Colón y San Vicente de Paul en la parroquia católica Nuestra Señora de Monte Carmelo. Sus hijos, cada uno a su manera, continúan su legado servicial a través de su compromiso en sus profesiones y en proyectos voluntarios.

Carlos disfrutaba pasar tiempo con su familia durante las vacaciones, los fines de semana y después del trabajo. Estaba orgulloso de los logros de sus hijos. Carlos era un hombre que no temía mostrar su cariño y amor por su familia. Sus hermanos lo consideraban como una figura paterna.

Carlos también tenía siete nietos que significaban mucho para él. Cada vez que los veía, no quería que se fueran. Disfrutaba de cualquier ocasión que tenia con ellos, como celebraciones de cumpleaños, días festivos, y reuniones familiares. Los amaba y ellos amaban a su Tata.

A Carlos le sobreviven su esposa de 50 años, Gloria Ríos; sus hijos y sus parejas, Carlos y Heather, Pedro y Angélica, Gaby y Hector, y Fernanda y Enrique; y sus siete nietos, Teotzin, Nayeli, Joaquin, Antonio, Metzli, Xavier y Ollin, y sus hermanos, Eddie y Eva Ríos.

El velorio para Carlos se llevará a cabo el lunes 13 de diciembre de 2021 de 5:00 PM a 11:00 PM en la Funeraria del Angel, 753 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA 91910. Una misa para Carlos tendrá lugar el martes 14 de diciembre 2021 de 10:00 AM a 11:00 AM en Nuestra Señora de Monte Carmelo, 2020 Alaquinas Dr, San Ysidro, CA 92173. Seguirá un entierro para Carlos de 12:00 PM A 1:00 PM en Holy Cross Cemetery & Mausoleum, 4470 Hilltop Dr, San Diego, CA 92102.
