Cristina Lidia Estrada de Nuñez

Cristina Lidia Estrada de Núñez nació el 3 de junio de 1944 en Callao, Perú. Fue la mayor de las hijas de un total de 11 hermanos, nacidos de Lidia y Humberto Estrada. Cristina, a una edad temprana, ayudó a su madre en los quehaceres de la casa y el cuidado de sus hermanos. Desarrolló una pasión por la cocina que la llevó a ser conocida como una notable cocinera de comida peruana entre amigos y familiares. Este talento también la llevó a convertirse en chef en una residencia de ancianos en la que trabajó durante muchos años hasta que decidió jubilarse.

Cristina estuvo casada durante más de 60 años con Victor Núñez y tuvieron 5 hijos: Yuly, Victor, Johnny, Tony y Christian. Se refería a sus hijos como sus "Guerreros.” Cristina estaba muy orgullosa de que todos sus hijos hayan servido en las fuerzas militares de los Estados Unidos. Ella apoyó de todo corazón sus trayectorias militares y disfrutó visitándolos en diferentes países alrededor del mundo.También disfrutó viajando con su familia a muchos lugares de los Estados Unidos, y muchos países como Italia, Perú, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica y Puerto Rico, por nombrar algunos. Fue una abuela muy querida por sus 15 nietos y una bisabuela de tres. Su nieta mayor, a quien tuvo el placer de criar en los primeros años de su vida y con quien tuvo una relación muy cercana, es Tameka Granison (37 años). La última de sus nietas es Camila Núñez (19 meses), con quien hablaba con frecuencia por FaceTime y la sostuvo por última vez en sus brazos en octubre de 2024.

Cristina se sacrificó para proporcionar mejores oportunidades a sus hijos y los animó a enfrentar sus luchas con valentía, siendo un verdadero testimonio de su espíritu guerrero. Llegó por primera vez al estado de Maryland con sus dos hijos más pequeños en ese momento, en el invierno de 1977. Dos semanas después se reunió toda la familia. Pasaron su primera Navidad y Año Nuevo en el estado de Maryland, para luego echar raíces en San Diego, California, en enero de 1978, donde Cristina vivió predominantemente hasta su fallecimiento. Ella era alguien a quien familiares y amistades acudían por su sabiduría y su fortaleza, incluso mientras luchaba contra el cáncer estos últimos meses. A menudo les decía a todos que se mantuvieran fuertes, mientras cerraba los puños y levantaba los brazos en el aire, en señal de fortaleza.

Su fuerte voluntad era solo superada por su fe en Dios. Cristina fue capaz de lograr la paz personal en su vida y transmitir esa paz a los demás debido a su creencia en Dios. Cristina viajaba constantemente a Perú para presenciar la procesión del "Señor de los Milagros" celebrada cada octubre. En sus últimos meses, cuando no podía asistir físicamente a la iglesia, le encantaba ver la misa católica transmitida a través de Facebook o la televisión desde la Catedral de Lima, Perú.

Cristina deja atrás un legado de compasión, fuerza, resiliencia y una verdadera devoción a Dios. Su familia y amigos llevarán su recuerdo en sus corazones para siempre.

La familia Nuñez ha decidido aceptar donaciones monetarias en lugar de regalos como flores para nuestra Madre Cristina. La intención es que todo lo recibido (100%) se presenten en honor a mi madre directamente a la Hermandad de La Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro del Barrio Frigorífico, su barrio natal en el Callao.

Nuestra familia Núñez-Estrada ha estado felizmente donando a esta iglesia durante muchos años para varios eventos, por lo que hay una conexión buena.

Cristina Lidia Núñez was born June 3, 1944, in Callao, Peru. She was the oldest sister of 11 total brothers and sisters born to Lidia and Humberto Estrada. Cristina, at an early age, learned to assist her mother with caring for her siblings, from household cleaning to cooking. She developed a passion for cooking which led her to be known as a remarkable cook of Peruvian food among friends and family. This talent also led her to become a chef at a retirement home in which she was employed for many years until she chose to retire.

Cristina was married for over 60 years to Victor Nunez, and they had 5 children: Yuly, Victor, Johnny, Tony, and Christian. She referred to her children as “guerreros” or warriors. Cristina was very proud that all her children served in the US military. She wholeheartedly supported their career path and enjoyed visiting them all over the world (from Hawaii to Portugal). She also enjoyed traveling with her family to many places Stateside, and many countries like Italy, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, to name a few. She was a beloved grandmother to 15 grandchildren and great-grandmother to three. Her oldest grandchild, who she took the pleasure of raising in the early years of her life, is Tameka Granison (37yo). Her youngest grandchild, who she spoke with frequently on FaceTime and last held in her arms in October 2024, is Camila Nunez (19 mo.).

Cristina was selfless in her commitment to her family. She sacrificed to provide better opportunities for her children and encouraged them to face their struggles head on, a true testament to her warrior spirit. She first arrived in Maryland with her two youngest children at the time, in the winter of 1977. The family, a few months later moved collectively to San Diego, CA in January 1978, where she predominantly lived until her passing. She was someone people gravitated to for wisdom and motivation. Even while battling cancer these last few months, she would often tell everyone to stay strong as she balled her fists and raised her arms in the air.

Her strong will was only second to her faith in God. Cristina was able to achieve personal peace in her lifetime and transmit that peace to others because of her belief in God. Cristina would attempt to travel yearly to Peru to witness the procession of the “Lord of Miracles” held in October. When she became unable to physically attend church, she loved watching the Catholic Mass transmitted over Facebook or television from the Cathedral in Lima, Peru.

Cristina leaves behind a legacy of compassion, strength, resilience, and a true devotion to God. Her family and friends will carry her memory in their hearts forever.

After months of battling with pancreatic cancer, Cristina Núñez (1944-2025), passed away peacefully in the early morning hours this past Saturday, June 14th. She is survived by her husband of 60+ years, Victor Núñez, and their five children: Yuly, Victor, Johnny, Tony, and Christian. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and a handful of great grandchildren.
