

Darcy Rene Ferland, age 85 of Poway, California passed away on May 31, 2016. He was born in Sanford Maine on 11/28/1930 and grew up with 4 brothers and one sister. Darcy graduated from St. Ignatius School after completing the 8th grade and was required to work in order to help support his family. He eventually enlisted in the Army, served 4 years during the Korean War and was stationed at the Panama Canal. In 1953 he met and married Dolores Laflamme, and together they had three children; Diane, Cindy and Steve. Darcy had various jobs during that time including driving a school bus, and working as a mechanic at the local gas station in Sanford, Maine. In 1962 his family moved from Maine to California. They lived in Spring Valley for approx. 18 years, then moved to El Cajon. Darcy was employed with the County of San Diego and worked as an auto mechanic repairing and maintaining the fleet of county vehicles. He eventually worked his way up to becoming the shop supervisor, and stayed employed there until he retired in 1990. Darcy’s passions were golfing, gardening and spending time with his 6 grandkids. Family was most important to him. Darcy moved to Gateway Gardens assisted living facility in November 2014, when his wife Dolores became ill and passed away. He was survived by his children; Diane Hadley and husband Guy, Cindy Van Mouwerik, and Steve Ferland and wife Ann. Grandchildren Mike and Kyle Hadley, Darcy and Dylan Van Mouwerik, and Matthew and Stephanie Ferland. He was also survived by his sister Viola Gagliardi of Plantsville, Connecticut, brother Ronald Ferland of Sanford, Maine, and brother Perley Ferland of Lebanon, Maine.
Funeral arrangements will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday June 20 at St. Kieran’s Catholic Church in El Cajon. Celebration of Life will be held immediately afterwards at daughter Cindy’s home. A partial military service will be held at Singing Hills Memorial park on Tuesday June 21 at 2:00 PM for family and close friends.
In lieu of flowers the Ferland family would like to have donations made to the Elizabeth Hospice.
