Denis Mac Joseph McCarthy

Denis Joseph McCarthy was born on February 24, 1927 to Michael and Catherine McCarthy at Summerhill, Bantry, County Cork, Ireland. He went to his heavenly reward on September 14, 2010, surrounded by his family at Sharp Birch-Patrick, Chula Vista,CA. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary of 58 years, seven children, Kathleen O'Regan (Bill) Cork, Ireland, Patricia Zimmer (Earl) Laguna Niguel, Teresa McCarthy of San Bernardino, Michael McCarthy (Kimberly) Poway, Monica Chestnutt (Roy) Austin,Texas, Thomas McCarthy(Katherine) Spring Valley and J.Dennis McCarthy (Nicole) of San Bernardino. Survived by sisters Esther Macora (Stan) Austin, Texas, Sister Trinita McCarthy of Florida and Paula Hinnell of Waterford, Ireland, brother Conor McCarthy (Ruth) Dublin, Ireland, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sally and Frank Hart of Brookline, MA. He also leaves 33 nieces and nephews and their families who loved and adored him.

He was "Papa" to 15 grandchildren: Kathleen, Conor, Kelly, Brendan, Michael, William, Bernadette, Erin, Gavin, Denise, Joey, Megan, Ryan, Claire, Riley and 4 great grandchildren Madison, Sidnie, Joseph and Sarah Marie.

Denis served in the United States Air Force for 20 years then worked as a Federal Sky/Air Marshall and retiring with the United States Customs Service in 1986 as a Customs Patrol Officer.

Denis and Mary spent 23 of the last 24 summers in their native Ireland, visited often by their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as the extended McCarthy family.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Timothy and Father Michael, sisters Teresa and Ella.

The McCarthy family would like to thank Dr. Kevin Malone and Dr. Kenneth Johnson for their care over the years, as well as Julie Maddox RN for coordinating Hospice care . We also thank the staff of Sharp Birch-Patrick for their wonderful and respectful care in his final days. Denis will be missed tremendously until we are all reunited. Services were held at St.Joseph Cathedral, San Diego, officiated by Father Thomas Relihan, family friend for over 50 years. Final resting place will be The Abbey Cemetery, Bantry, County Cork, Ireland.
