Donald was born in Bismarck, North Dakota to Beryl and Ruby Vandeventer, and he grew up on the family farm raising cattle, hogs, and chickens. He was a man of great integrity, solid values, and a strong work ethic. During his time in the Navy near the end of World War II, he met his wife of sixty years, Dolores Ames. They settled in San Diego where they raised their children. Don worked for Pacific Bell, rising from lineman to District Manager, a career that brought him satisfaction on and many life long friends. Before her death in 2009, Don and Dolores traveled the world and were blessed to see their grandchildren grow into adults and start their own families. Don was a great lover of sailing, scuba diving, golf and tending his gardens and orchards. He is survived by his children, Larry VandeVenter (wife Kathy) and Angela Miranda (husband John), and his grandchildren, Nashua Celata, Li VandeVenter, John Van Miranda, and Martin Miranda. He always had a huge smile for his 8 great grandchildren who were his pride and joy. He le us all a legacy of love, kindness, humor and don't forget, Dutch frugality. He will be forever in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Elizabeth Hospice, an amazing organization that kept him comfortable in his last days, or The American Parkinson Disease Association.
In addition, the family will be forever grateful for the excellent care and genuine love he received from all the staff at Sage Villa, and especially his caregiver and friend, Victor.
