She was born in Ottawa, Illinois and although named Florence, she became known by family and friends as Betty. She served as a captain in the Women’s Army Corps from 1942 to 1946. During that time, she met her husband, Tyler who was serving in the US Navy. They were married in 1943. Betty later worked as a secretary and was known for her organization and efficiency. They adopted three children who predeceased them.
As a couple, they were active members of a Methodist Church in every city where they lived. They both served in many roles in their last church, the Mission Hills United Methodist. Tyler passed away in 2005.
Betty was also active in the Women’s Army Corps Veteran Association and the United Methodist Women.
Memorial Services will be held April 14, at 11:00 am at the Mission Hills United Methodist Church, 4044 Lark St, San Diego 92103. Donations may be directed to the Church in her name.
