

Gordon "Gordy" Shields of El Cajon , California passed away on Sunday, June 30th at the age of 95. Gordon is survived by his loving children son Gordon Scott Shields of Lodi California, daughters Valerie Shields, Susan McKeown both from San Diego. Gordon was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on April 20,1918 to Leopold and Nellie Shields. When Gordon was a young man he joined the United States Navy and after being released from the navy Gordon went back to school and got his master's degree in teaching. He taught at Grossmont High School for many years and also became a student counselor at Grossmont College.
Gordon "Gordy" Shields, who set numerous age-group cycling records late in his life and was one of the county’s most prominent bike advocates Shields, who lived in El Cajon, began racing bikes in his late 60s. He set national records in the 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-90 and 90-95 class for the 20 kilometer time trial.
Gordon will be laid to rest next to his loving wife Olwyn G. Shields at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
A Memorial Bike Ride/Walk will be taking place at 9:00 am on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Pepper Park: 3299 Tidelands Ave., National City, CA 919150.
