
Colonel Jack R. Sloan (Jake) died peacefully August 6, 2013. Longtime Coronado resident, and recently of Belmont Village in Poway, he was preceded in death by his wife Ann Miller Sloan, parents Frederick and Mabel, and his brother, Harry Sloan.
He was born May 20, 1920, to Fred and Mabel Sloan in Glendale, California. The family later moved to San Francisco, California. Jack graduated from Lowell High School in 1938, where he was student body president and very active in sports, lettering in football and track. After graduation, Jack started college at the University of California Berkeley campus but left college in 1942, because of WW II, to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. He later went back to college, while in the U.S. Marine Corp, and graduated with a Business Administration degree from the University of Maryland in 1960.
Jack spent over 30 years of military service in the U.S. Marine Corp as an aviator fighting in three wars. While in the Marine Corp he was stationed in California, Virginia and Hawaii when not overseas defending our country. One of Jake’s greatest passions and pleasures was flying.
In 1948, Jake married Ann Miller. They had five children; Mike (Clara) Sloan, Bill (Shawna) Sloan, Patty (John) Christiansen, Jack Jr., and Robert Sloan. His eight grandchildren are Sean and Katie Sloan, Nicole (Dan) Claric, Billy and Madison Sloan, Kelly (Joe) Linhares, Amy Christiansen, and Tara Sloan. His great grandchildren are Tanner and Sloan Linhares and Vincent Claric. Jake loved his family and was proud of their accomplishments. He enjoyed talking to them and knowing all about their lives.
After serving in the Marine Corp for more than thirty years, Jake was ready to retire. He then filled his time with his hobbies and business ventures, which included silver and gold assaying for mines in Mexico. He also loved following his favorite sports teams, especially the San Diego Padres. He became very active in the Coronado Optimist Club where he served as president and then on to regional governor. He was also an active member in the Coronado Friends of the Library.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, November 10, 2013, from 11:00-1:00 p.m. It will be held at the Coronado Golf Course.
