He was born in the Logan Heights are of San Diego. His house in Logan Heights was built by his father prior to his birth and still exists to this day.
His parents were Leopoldo and Nieves Mendez.
Jesus worked at the Naval Air Rework Facility at Naval Air Station, North Island in Coronado, California, for 30 years and retired in 1978.
Jesus served in the U.S Army during World War II from August 1943 to January 1946. He served as a medic and landed at Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion.. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Concha Mendez, Children; Laura (Leonard) Paoletto, Robert (Laurel) Mendez, Grandchildren; John (Claudia) Paoletto, Gina Paoletto, Anthoy (Mandy) Paoletto, Nicole (Tim) Thompson, and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sisters; Lucy Orosco and Antonia Cordova, and his brother Jose Mendez.
Funeral and Military Honors will be held at Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego, California on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 10:30 a.m.
