January 2, 1943 – July 26, 2026
Joel Sison Erum, age 83, of San Diego, California, passed away on July 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on January 2, 1943, in Mabini, Pangasinan, Philippines, Joel came to the United States through his service in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country for 20 years, with assignments in Hawaii, San Diego, and Guam, before retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in October 1989. Throughout his military career and beyond, Joel exemplified dedication, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to those around him.
Joel expressed his love through hard work. He devoted his life to providing for his family, always putting their needs before his own. His strength, perseverance, and sense of responsibility were matched by his generous heart, practical wisdom, and willingness to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed.
Outside of work, Joel found joy in fishing, gardening, and craftsmanship. He had a remarkable talent for working with his hands and took great pride in building, repairing, and creating. He could often be found fixing things around the house or working on the family cars, always determined to solve the problem himself. He even built furniture for his home, leaving behind not only beautiful pieces of craftsmanship but lasting reminders of his love and devotion to his family. His resourcefulness and attention to detail reflected the kind of husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother he was—someone who found purpose in creating, providing, and caring for others.
Among the many memories his family will forever treasure is his familiar phrase before every family photograph: "Whiskey!" It was a tradition that never failed to bring smiles and laughter, capturing the warmth, humor, and joy he brought to every gathering.
Joel is survived by his beloved wife, Lourdes; his son, Jonathan; his daughter, Joanne and his cherished grandchildren, Angelina , Christopher James, and Athena Rose. He also leaves behind his siblings, extended family, and many dear friends who will miss him deeply. His legacy of love, resilience, generosity, and selfless devotion will continue to live on through all who had the privilege of knowing him.
